I just send a PM with location for gm-counter.cgi and gm-entrylist.cgi. I'm not sure what you mean clear it out. Can I delete it, or just the contents of the file.
The gm-template.cgi loads just fine, but I think that here is something wrong since I can't do a rebuild all. I think that I've narrowed the problem down to the main index since that's the one that doesn't rebuild. I get:
An internal Greymatter error has occured in _padDigits, possibly due to invalid data, check your entryfiles and run Diagnostic and Repair.
Any more thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Apologies for the delay, just delete the contents of the file. If you delete the file, Greymatter will complain.
The D & R will rebuild the file for you.

I didn't realize that our thread went to two pages... Silly me.
OK... So I deleted the contents of gm-entrylist.cgi did a D&R and it now it looks like it should. I still can't seem to rebuild the main entry page. I wonder if there's something wrong my with template or how you generated it?
I'm sure that you are getting frustrated too! I just want to upgrade and be done with it!

I am more worried that there is an undiscovered issue in Greymatter. If you can view the templates in the admin screens, then they are ok.
What kind of errors do you get when you try to rebuild your main page? Also, can you post a link to your gm-entrylist and gm-counter file?

So just to close the loop with everyone, here's my upgrade story: Backed up everything Fixed corrupt entry (duplicate comments, improperly formed comments, etc.), had to hack the comment counter field One entry cgi file was missing. Copied an entry to the write number and then hacked it to have the right sequence number and date/time stampe. D&R. Everything "wrong" seems to be better. copied gm to gm173 Logged in, fixed directories to point to test dir. D&R. Uploaded new code. Logged in. Did update now. (Config still good, templates blown away) D&R dropped in coldstone's template file he hacked for me and validated that it looked right. rebuilt all all good So I went into production and so far things are good. I can not thank Coldstone enough for his helps. There's been quite a few PMs behind the scenes. If anyone needs more details, PM me. Adam -- www.echoes.com/

Dear Coldstone & all, In upgrading from V 1.21d I had a large number of such bad files in archives/*.cgi. I solved the problem by deleting all comments and Karma in the CGI and setting everything to 0 for each file, as there were just too many files to check, and I did not know what I was looking for. After I fixed those CGI files GM rebuilt OK with no need to delete the gm-entrylist.
However, deleting people's intelligent comments (there are some) is NOT a good solution, and I would like to put back as many of those files as possible.
Can anyone give some clues as to what sort of characters might be bad or what may be causing the problem? I experimented with changing numbers of comments recorded or just removing Karma - nothing worked except removing all the comments. I have sent a sample bad file separately by email. They are too long to include here.
At least, GM should be able to tell us where the problem is exactly rather than getting stuck, and at best it should be able to tolerate whatever is currently giving it a bellyache.
Thanks, A.I. email - news(at)mideastweb.org

Could you post the sample online? Usually the issue is non-ascii characters, missing dates, etc.
By looking at the generated gm-entrylist.cgi you can sometimes spot these issues. Particularly missing dates. If you edit the file, you can pull the variable length fields and then you can see pretty quickly where stuff is missing.
