I am having the same problem (and possibly a solution). I run a website at: carcynic.com(OK, small plug, but it's relevant) The site is largely related to Citroen automobiles, which is properly spelled with an umlaut (..) over the 'e'. I use ALT-U-E to enter the umlaut-ed 'e', and it looks fine while editing, and in preview, but when the page is viewed, it appears as a bunch of incorrect characters. I edited the header templates and changed the encoding from ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8. Now the pages, including the umlaut-e, render correctly. Is there anything wrong with this solution? Why is it ISO-8859-1 by default?

The default ( in your case ISO-8859-1) is set by the web server you are on.
