Hi... Im relatively new to greymatter but had been doing okay but lately I have not been able to post or modify templates. My site is www.lit-up.net. This is the error message I get... Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@lit-up.net and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. This happens when I try to post a new post or when I have changed the side bar template. Weirdly though now when I log in and look at my side bar it shows the edit I wanted to make but it doesnt show it on the actual site. Can someone help this newbie? Thanks

Are you able to run Diagnostics and Repair from the Configuration screen?

Don't feel stupid, GreyMatter can be uncooperative at times. The Diagnostics not working is not good though. There are a couple things to check: - Check your permissions on your files in the cgi-bin and archive folders.
- Check your webserver error logs for more information
- Do you get the same error when posting a new entry?
- Did you paste text into an entry or template (like from word or an email)?
- Make a backup of your archives folder and then remove the .html files. Try doing a 'Rebuild All' and see how many .html files get created. Then copy back your old files so the site still works. There could be an issue with a particular entry that is causing the Diagnostics to fail.
- When you edit your templates, if you don't have GM automatically rebuild (uncheck the box), does it still error out?
If you know where your werbserver error logs are, you can also try downloading and running the Gm Libary 1.7.2.3 Trace (zip) from the 50megs.com download site. Then if you post the results from the error log, we will have more to go on.

Okay... so so far...
Are my webserver logs the same thing as my "error logs" on my cpanel page?
I do get the same error when doing anything - posting a new message or editing templates.
The first time this happened I did try to cut and paste an article from the internet into a new entry, however I have also just tried typing test into an entry too, neither worked.
I tried editing the template and unchecking the box you said and it did not error out that time.
As for the making a backup and taking out and adding back the files I will see if I can figure that out next...
And again, I feel silly but I have no idea what you mean about checking my permissions... (sheepish grin)... Im still new to all this...
I am so thankful for your help!!

To check file permissions in CPanel goto your File Manager then goto the folder with your Greymatter files. You will notice on the right hand side some numbers like 755, 744, 644 these are the permissions for the file on the left side. If the permissions on any file needs to be changed click on that file then click on the "Change Permissions" link in the top right corner of your CPanel. Read the Installation Instructions phd-hosting.com/greymatter/downloads/gm_install.htmlit will show you what you need to know. Good luck, Carlos

Then if you post the results from the error log, we will have more to go on. Okay so I think Ive started this process... I downloaded the file, renamed it gm-library.cgi (after making a back up of the original) and put it in the cgi-bin folder. Now what?

Now, try to go into the admin screen and try to run Diagnostics and Repair. This should put a bunch of info into your logs that will help us figure out the issue, you can post it or send it via a private message to me.
However, I think that might not be needed. Based on the fact that you could edit a Template and it worked, when you didn't rebuild your files, I think it means that there is a wonky character in one of your entry files.
To test this theory, you can try to 'Rebuild Archive Entry Pages'. I think that will only look at your older entries. Basically, when you create a new entry, its trying to read the entry with the funky character and Gm is not happy. When you do a Diagnostic and Repair its again trying to read all your entries.
Did you get a chance to try to remove your .html files and do a rebuild?
Otherwise, I am guessing that its your last entry that is giving you problems. You can try making a backup of 'archives', then download and reupload the files 00000018.cgi - 00000020.cgi in text-only (ascii) mode. This should remove any bad characters.
I think your file permissions are ok.

Ok so I was messing around... and went and deleted all the entries that were either closed (except a couple I needed) or that had not worked. All the entries that I had tried to post were showing there although they werent showing on the actual site... After deleting them I rebuilt everything and now all seems good again.
So for now everything seems fine... thank you both so much for your help, it is sooo appreciated. My only question is should I now go back and replace that gm-library file with the old one?
Again, thanks!
Cheers!

Yes, that would be best. The file you loaded is for debugging and slows things down a little.

I am glad everything is working, I know it can be frustrating to not have GM working.
I am guessing when you pasted something into a blog entry, something got saved that GM didn't like. I just wish I could recreate this so I could try to write some code that would 'sanitize' text input. Greymatter currently handles the issues with different line endings, but I want people to be able to paste stuff into entries without GM breaking.
So if anyone has this issue or has a file they think contains a 'bad character' please post.

I know one of my friends once posted a subject &Title; and Greymatter did NOT like that at all, duhh. But other times it has been okay with things of similar nature... It is kind of temperamental.
