cannot customize entry template

i am using 1.6 and i cannot, for the life of me, alter the entry templates. whatever i do , it remains the generic format it came with. I EVEN DELETE ALL THE TEXT/SCRIP IN THE HTML EDITOR FIELDS and it still doesnt change anything.

i.e.
Index Entry Template: Standard Entries

NOTHING HERE I DELETED IT ALL

what is going on?

any suggestions? i really would like to keep 1.6, but maybe i should downgrade?
