As you know, I recently upgraded from 1.3 to 1.7.3. I noticed that the email notification that comments have been posted no longer contain the entry number and description in the subject. It's very difficult to know which entry the comments is for without that info. I figured out how to mod gm-comments.cgi to include this info. I'll post it if people are interested, but I was curious as to why this was taken out.
Also, I'm getting high percentage of 500 errors on comments. Is there anything that I can check and/or get my ISP to do? Thoughts?

To answer the first question, it was only removed because of my sloppiness. When I was working on that section, I failed to completely modify it to resemble the original functionality. That is one of my goals as a work on Greymatter is to improve the code without a significant visual difference or loss of functionality. Ah. Thanks for the code in the bug report forum. That definitely does the trick and I'll have to remember to look there in case I bump into something else.
So far as the 500 errors, I'm not sure where else to look for logs. All I really have is my apache log. I haven't tried using the greymatter trace so perhaps I'll look into that unless you have other suggestions.

Oh no, I meant the apache log (although, there are other apache log, like access, etc.). I was hoping it might include a some more info. If its easy, can you post the error from the apache log?
The trace won't shed any more light in this situation.

This is all of my gm-comments.cgi hits from yesterday. I don't think that I actually got too many emails saying that comments were posted... Probably some of them errored out and some people didn't finit the verification.

On closer inspection, that appears to be the access log. Can you post a small sample from the error log? I am hoping for an error message with a line number.
Have you ever been able to cause the 500 error? Can you post the comment text if you have?

Sorry for not getting back to you quick. You know how "real life" gets in the way.  I've got a request in my ISP for the error log, so when I get that I'll post it. I'm in the middle of doing to test comments to see if I can repro the error. I tried posting a bunch of text... Got the preview page... Got the comment verification screen and then it timed out (or at least that's what my corporate proxy said). If you want to try a comment on my site (http://www.echoes.com/) that would be great. update I was able to generate an error. I started to post a comment, and waited at the 'enter the phrase' screen for many minutes. Its supposed to say "hey, you need to try again", but instead it freaked. I will see if I can do this at home now.

Thanks so much for testing. Couple of things.
1) I did some digging aroung in my apache access log this afternoon trying to follow the clickstream to the 500 errors. I would say that most of them are probably caused by direct access to gm-comments.cgi since I don't see a referrer or the source IP anywhere near the error. I did see at least one (of my 9 500s yesterday) where I'm pretty sure that someone was trying to comment. I should also point out that I was never paying attention to .cgi in my analog reports (and hense never noticed any 500s) before the upgrade. I thought that I should watch them afterwards. I did look at some old logs and I was 500 free before the upgrade.
2) I also noticed that when I was trying to comment and it was taking a long time that all of my archive indexes (ex. archive-122001.html) were regenerated. I was thinking that's what took so long, but I just checked and that didn't happen when you commented. Weird huh?
I should post this in the forum except for the stats stuff... I trust you but I don't want other people to see it or for it to get indexed.

I tried turning off the comment verification and did another test and it errored right away. I'm going to go back to the ISP, since I even had a problem with gm.cgi trying to logon. There must be an issue with them.

Cool, it would be great to hear if you come up with anything. There was an issue that a another user had where her Web Host would block the execution of a script that received the 'script' tag. Looking over the logs you posted, I noticed alot of errors on: www.echoes.com/greymatter/archives/00000272.htmlI don't know if its from legit comments or spammers (who know how they are calling the scripts). |

Cool, it would be great to hear if you come up with anything. There was an issue that a another user had where her Web Host would block the execution of a script that received the 'script' tag. Looking over the logs you posted, I noticed alot of errors on: www.echoes.com/greymatter/archives/00000272.htmlI don't know if its from legit comments or spammers (who know how they are calling the scripts). Sorry for the delay. I'm pretty much stumped and not sure what to do. My ISP didn't come up with anything interesting. I think that a lot posts to 272.html are posts from a script since I don't see any other references to the client IP address in my logs. I still see quite a few "random" 500 errors, even when using the control panel, so I'm pretty sure that it's an ISP issue, not GM, but who really knows. I certainly don't at this point. Thanks for all of your help. I'll try 1.7.4 when it comes out and if something starts to work, I'll post. |
