hi guys, I am a newbie and just started to play with gm. already spent couple of hours on the first installation issue, and I wonder if you can help. I cannot seem to see where I am doing wrong - gm version 1.7.3 - perl supportd by my server 5.6.1 or above and Perl directory is correctly specified. The error I get is Error Notice Can't save the file "/weblog/archive/gm-testfile.txt". Please make sure that directory to save the file is CHMODed to 666 and try running Diagnostics & Repair from the Configuration screen. Through Filezilla I have checked and this folder (both to be sure) are 666. My server, by the way is Linux. I have made following configuration: Local Log Path: /weblog Local Entries/Archives Path: /weblog/archive Local CGI Path: /cgi-bin/greymatter Website Log Path: www.mysite.it/weblogWebsite Entries Path: www.mysite.it/weblog/archiveWebsite CGI Path: www.mysite.it/cgi-bin/greymatterAny good idea? ;D Please. Additionally, do you happen to understand why when I am in Filezilla and I set to 666 then I cannot browse the directory anymore, but I have to reset it to 766? ? thanks t

so today after a good sleep I tried again, as reading other posts, I have also tried to 777 all directories in weblog and copied an empty index.html file in both directories, but nothing. I get same errors again.
if you have good ideas, or link to post discussing same issues...please do not hesitate :-)
thanks t

You have come across an error in the error message. If you chmod the directory to 666, its no longer treated like a directory. You are correct to use 777 for your directories. The issue I think you are running into is that your 'local paths' are relative, rather than absolute. Is your weblog actually off the root level of your webserver? Usually its under a user directory, for whichever user your webserver runs as (not always of course ). Do you remember what values GM had when it first started up? Those are usually pretty accurate. web.petefinnigan.com/greymatter_mods.htm has a file 'pwd.txt', which you should rename and put into your cgi-bin. There are directions on the page to set it up and run it. It will tell you your paths.

yesterday I run into this post in which this pwd thing was mentioned, but couldn't really understand it. the way you put it for me, clearly showed me where I was a dumbass.
now it is working and I have learned one thing more.
thanks a lot t

No problem. Not to get all 'after school special' on you, but I don't think you are a dumbass Communication is difficult and hopefully the greymatter install documentation will get rewritten someday. Hopefully for 1.8.1.
