Is 1.8.2 not compatible with PHP 5?
If it is what file changes do I need to do?

Greymatter is written in Perl. The only PHP involved would be if you modify your templates to create php code. In which case it would be upto your templates entirely.

I don't suppose anyone has or could point me to an example of GM that's running in a PHP world? My primary site is going PHP this winter (assuming I make the time), and I really don't want to have to leave Greymatter behind.

That is a tougher issue. Its possible to make a php site with greymatter, but you would need Perl and Php. There was talk of a php version of Gm ( greymatter 2.0), but I think you would have to google around for it.
