I've wanted to convert my music web site into a blog for quite some time. Joining a blogger group wasn't practical because I have my own domain, web space and cgi-bin, and I don't think that www. bloggerGroupIncorporated .com /rocknation would make me look terribly professional to the music promoters and publicists. Needless to say, Greymatter sounded like the answer to a prayer! I've installed it successfully (regretfully, my ISP is stuck on Perl 5.0--I've dropped them a note suggesting they upgrade), and now I'm looking over the templates and style sheets trying to figure out which elements I can should carry over. I'm open to suggestions, and should have something to show you soon!

Yay, finally something I'm not TOO ashamed to show you! Had some problems, but only one was related to Greymatter. For some reason, the search results page wouldn't work. The search engine itself worked fine, but the results page always came in truncated. I looked at the comments.cgi, and so much of the HTML is in uppercase that I'm sure there's a validity problem. Fortunately, I found a service that will search up to 1000 of your pages free in exchange for placing related advertising on the results page--a page which you can make look as though you have never left the blog site. Another problem was my ISP. Their version of Perl 5 was the wrong one for Greymatter 1.6.1 and Moveable Type. I then attempted to install WordPress since I knew my ISP has MySQL capabilities. But no such luck--they had the wrong version of SQL, too! All of which meant, I'm afraid, that I now had the wrong version of an ISP... Then my beloved Javascript platform sniffer stopped working. Since I found it at Webmonkey years ago, I make Mac and PC-tailored stylesheets instead of Mac and PC-tailored web sites. Placed in your HTML, the script determines which platform you're using and connects to the right stylesheet. Because Greymatter introduced me to XHTML compliance (I refer to the validator site as "the piss test"--will my page come up clean or dirty?), I realized that maybe the script was just outdated. I made all the text lower case, put the word "script" in front of "type," and my sniffer literally came back to life! As for the site itself, I know it's not very slick or artsy, but that isn't really what it's for. Turning it into a blog will make it much easier to post, update, and search for music information in addition to use more multimedia. I've even done backup layouts to accomodate those extra big ad banners and the new wider computer monitors. So despite the setbacks, and the fact that I'm moving on to a new ISP and WordPress, I will be eternally grateful to the folks behind Greymatter 1.3.1 for starting me off on the right foot! www.rocknation.tv
