Tried to upgrade from 1.2 to the newest version. Of course, I didn't see the whole "make yourself a new author or you can't log in" security announcement until AFTER the upgrade. So I re-uploaded gm-author.cgi, re-logged in as Alice, made myself an author, and it worked. I went to try out the comment spam features (why I'm doing the upgrade to begin with), and went to post a comment. After that, I got a white page where my entry should be. Long story short, all my templates are now blank! The entires are all in the archives directory, but the entries are now all blank, of course. Anyone got any ideas? My host will have a back-up to restore to (I'm quite sure), but does anyone know what went wrong? I might also add that perhaps the Security Announcement should be added to the install.html file.

It sounds like your templates were wiped out during the upgrade. You can check the gm-templates.cgi file and see what it looks like. If you use the standard gm-templates.cgi file, I am betting you will see your site with the default look. So you can change it through the Admin screens or look at the backup and try to manually change them.

The templates.cgi file was there, and it appeared my stuff was still there. It looks like the format of my old templates.cgi and the new version are VASTLY different. (Of course, that just may be the difference in my template vs. a new, default template, but I don't think so.) In any event, converting all that cgi over to html to put back in the new installation was too much of a hassle. I've restored my site via my hosts backup, so at least I'm up and running again. I suppose I could go with a whole new installation, but leave my archives directory intact. My host has Wordpress already installed on their cpanel server, but I have a certain loyalty to GM. I've used it since 2001, and have several thousand posts in there. And, though I work well in html, I've yet to make the jump to css, which is what Wordpress uses. I'd like to stay with GM, but I think it may be time for me to leap.

Css isn't too bad if you know html and GM of course supports whichever you want to use. There have been a lot of changes since 1.2, so making the jump to 1.8 takes some effort. Good luck with whichever route you go.

How about this idea: I start with a new installation. I then stick a copy of everything from my old archives folder into the new archives folder. Would this work? I don't mind copying/pasting my old templates into a new installation. I would mind, though, losing seven years of blogging.

That should work. Nothing in the archive folder has changed format. Its the gm-templates.cgi, gm-entries.cgi, etc. that have changed format.
