How to retrieve the password from GM 1.3?
« Thread Started on Nov 6, 2010, 3:51pm »

Hi,

I built a blog for a friend long time ago using greymatter 1.3, and later on my friend created his own blog and I just keep this blog there as an archive place.

I haven't touched this page for a long time, and I have changed computer so many times and I couldn't remember what password I have used for this site.

Is there a way to retrieve the password? There is no link at gm.cgi page to retrieve the password.

I ftp-ed to my ISP, but could not find the blog folder in my public_html . I don't know why, but the site is still up and running at http://home.hiwaay.net/~roslin

Just wonder if any of you here know how to retrieve this password. Thanks,

drt

After looking at the files in 1.3, You probably only need to change gm-authors.cgi in a text editor. :-/

but this was a lot of work testing and trying, so I'll leave this up...
For the newer versions:

This worked for me when I tested it, but use at your own risk:

Can you see your cgi-bin?
If you can see the contents of the cgi-bin...
Backup your gm-authors.cgi and name it bk-gm-authors.cgi, then download it.
Next, upload the default gm-authors.cgi thats included with the version your running.

Now you can login with the default username and password.
Login and CHANGE the default user to YOUR OLD USERNAME and YOUR NEW PASSWORD.

Download the gm-authors.cgi and open it with a text editor.
Open your bk-authors.cgi with a text editor.

Copy the text in the gm-authors.cgi and paste it over YOUR OLD USERNAME data located in bk-authors.cgi.

Save the modified bk-gm-authors.cgi as gm-authors.cgi and upload the file to your cgi-bin.

You should have your admin access back, and all other usernames and passwords should be preserved.

I hope this helps someone.
I tested it, and it worked for me, but as I said earlier:
Use At Your Own Risk.

(be sure to have backups of your backup) :)

bill wants to be a beta tester for 1.8.3 even should it be a complicated upgrade.
