GM file format documentation

Is there any documentation on the format of the .cgi files used by GM, or should I just generate my own (based on inspection of the code of course)?

Given the lack of activity on GM I'm looking for a way to preserve the data that I've fed into my installation - preferably in as close a way as possible to the original.
