GM 1.8.3 beta available for testing
« Thread Started on Sept 13, 2009, 2:26pm »

Hi All,

I spent some time yesterday evening and created a reasonable size change to GM (some 50 or so edits to the code) to allow posts to be created that do not use the standard padded file names such as http://web.petefinnigan.com/testblog/archives/00000019.htm but instead use a nice URL like http://web.petefinnigan.com/testblog/archives/karma_post_link.htm .

This type of functionallity was asked about some time ago in a post in this forum - http://greymatterforum.proboards.com/ind....play&thread=340 and it is something i would like to use in my site for a new section that I would like to use GM for.

I have modded the code to allow this to work. I have added a new field to the new post screen and the edit post screen that places a new entry textbox below the "mood" box to allow you to specify a filename for the post (so, in this case i typed in "karma_post_link" in the above example). You can then post as normal and the HTML file is created with the file name instead of the padded number name.

The mod ended up being quite complex and a lot of changes are required to quite a few files. Hence this needs to be released as a proper version rather than a mod as I feel people will get stuck trying to make it run by simply patching.

I have a test blog with some test posts that are filenames chosen by the author and some that are still padded numbers. You can mix and match if you choose. You can also go back and remove the filename from an existing post to change it back to a padded file if you wish or change an existing padded file to a custom name. Not sure of the SEO value of doing this..:-), but this allows an existing blog to start to use more SEO effiective file names for entries.

I have done some testing and I have tested:

new posts, both post and preview
edit post, post and preview
edit post change to a custom file name
posting comments
posting karma votes
rebuild all

I have checked all generated links on all pages and the site seems to hang together. The test blog is here - http://web.petefinnigan.com/testblog/entries/

As I said the mod is complex and before simply putting it out as 1.8.3 i would like to get a couple of volunteers to test it. Please!

I have not written the upgrade code yet but will do so later this week but if anyone wants to install they can and I will advise how to edit the existing entry .cgi files to make it work.

I will call this beta 1 as beta 2 will need to test the upgrade and clean install (actually a clean install should just work now). I also plan to add categories and also feeds to the same release within the next week.

Please send me a message on this board or rather just email me - my email address is in my signature at the bottom or visit my website there is an email address on the front page. I will then send you the latest version for testing.

Thanks

cheers

Pete

Just wanted to add my name to the list of testers if needed as I have been working with GM since 1.3 release.

All the best,
Charlie Roberts
