So, I'm not sure where the "chasing the elusive 00000000.cgi" thread from the old forum can be found, but I have some new developments on it.
Now, twice, either my server or GM has done something funky and when I go to post an entry, it gives me the 00000000.cgi message. When I go to see what is wrong in my archives and cgi directories, the entry cgi file that would be the entry I am trying to post is a 0kb file, the entrylist is blanked, and the counter is blanked. Granted, I am using 1.21b still, but I think it might have to do more with the sheer number of entries on my site.
Example. Right now when I went to post entry #3705, it gave me the error. I went to my archives directory and a 00003705.cgi was actually there, but it was empty. My entrylist was blanked and my counter was blanked. It also did this when I tried to post #3698, so updating the list wasn't hard as I keep backups at all times but... Maybe someone has an idea as to why it is doing this? There weren't any problems from 3698-3704 so obviously I created valid files. I also don't know if those files are blanked before or after I am trying to post the entry (I assume it is happening as I try to post), as I am unaware of the problem until I get the 00000000.cgi message. Obviously a file named 00000000.cgi does not exist at any point.
Well thanks for anything you can suggest so it stops doing this (besides telling me to upgrade) or an ideas you have as to why it is blanking files on me.

Fooouuund it. PS I love how I come up in this as the one in danger of my entries being wiped out after 5000. I only had 1600 entries then!!! 3700 is quite a bit more.

Thanks for the link. Thats interesting history. Getting to handle some of its assumptions is the tough part.
I discovered the 5000 issue when we had those performance issues after 1.7.2 was released. I just hope no one gets upto 5000 entries before I can fix that. Uggh.

as soon as i learned of the 5000 bug i stopped running d+r cause i know the files well enough anyways. but i guess im still a far way off (now at 3700) and havent updated gm in a while anyways... i still wonder what is making gm blank my files though. it hasnt happened since then but i doubt it is just a fluke.

So how did you fix this? I still don't know as the link is not active. I just run into this problem now and fixed it by renaming a copy of one of my .cgi files to 00000000.cgi. That's a silly way to do it and I don't know if I didn't mess something else but it worked.

The link seems to be working. You have to copy it off the page since the forums here have split the link up so that it doesn't work.
Basically it requires a code fix and should only appear on older versions of Greymatter (pre 1.3.1 I think). What eversion are you using?

I have run into yet another 00000000.cgi error, in the strangest of places: the Search screen. It turns out (as I have started using D&R again... Maybe I should go fix that bug before I hit 5000, I'm at 4236 now...) that D&R will rebuild the list and counter and freak out when it gets to an empty entry file (like 00004226.cgi) and not know what to do with itself and give that error because in the log list it looks like ||||||||no or whatever instead of having a number. It figures if 4226 exists then even if the cgi file is empty it should still include it and not wipe it. I'm not sure of a good fix to this, other than making a fake entry with a time stamp between the surrounding entries with "Greymatter fixed this entry, it was blanked" as the text or something. :\ Unless the new GM doesn't rely on consecutive entry numbers anymore. I'm still using 1.21b -.-;;
The way I've been fixing these things is: 1. Run D&R as long as you have less than 5000 entries or this bug has been fixed in version x.x which you have. This will rebuild the entry list and counter which are probably your main reasons for giving you the 00000000.cgi error 2. If you still run into fun stuff with this error, look in your gm-entrylist.cgi file for a funky line that does not have entry data. That entry will probably be an empty cgi file. Modify accordingly (pick a time stamp between the two surrounding entries, not too hard if you only blog once a day, pick the newer entry surrounding it and move the time stamp back a minute or something). Then make up some fun text and FTP over. Yay. Re-run D&R. Then it will go away.

Thanks for the information. Newer versions of greymatter (1.3.1) will look for missing (possibly blank, not sure) and create a closed 'filler' entry with "Greymatter fixed this entry".
